IRONMAN® ANNOUNCES THE CAPITAL CITY OF MACEIÓ IN ALAGOAS, BRAZIL AS HOST OF NEW IRONMAN® 70.3® TRIATHLON.
“South America has been a region of aggressive expansion for IRONMAN over the past few years and our new event in Alagoas is indicative of that growth,” said Joanna Jordan, Managing Director of Latin America for IRONMAN. “The demand for IRONMAN races continues to flourish in Brazil, and Alagoas will be an attractive and compelling destination for our athletes and their families.”
One of more than 100 events in the global IRONMAN 70.3 race series, the IRONMAN 70.3 Alagoas triathlon will lead athletes along a 1.2-mile (1.9K) swim, 56-mile (90K) bike and 13.1-mile (21.1K) run throughout the city of Maceió. The race will begin in the calm waters of Pajuçara Beach with a one-lap swim. From Pajuçara Beach, the flat two-loop bike course will take participants through an amazing landscape extending to Frances Beach, providing remarkable views of the Atlantic Ocean. Athletes will conclude the race with a two-loop run along the Pajuçara Beach, following the palm tree-lined streets of Maceió.
“Maceió, the capital of Alagoas, is located in northeast Brazil. It offers a great coastal ambiance and stands out for its beauty, embedded in palm trees, mangroves and the bright green sea. It also has a remarkable culture, reflected in its arts and crafts, cuisine and customs,” said Carlos Galvão, Race Director. “Maceió deserves its nickname ‘Water Paradise’ and is famous for its sensational coastline with turquoise waters and amazing beaches. We are pleased to host an IRONMAN 70.3 triathlon in Alagoas.”
The IRONMAN 70.3 Alagoas will offer 30 coveted age-group qualifying slots to the 2018 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship.
